Positive Behavior Focus for the Month: GRATITUDE
MATH: We just began our 3rd unit, “Stickers, Number Strings, and Story Problems”. Soon the children will be working on solving story problems with missing information. If you would like to work on some problems with your child at home, here is an example of what they should be able to solve:
- Katy has a bunch of 18 balloons. Sally gave her some more balloons. Katy then had 31 balloons. How many balloons did Sally give to Katy?
- There were some turkeys sitting on a fence. 17 more turkeys joined them. Now there are 34 turkeys on the fence. How many turkeys were on the fence to begin with?
- There were 27 children eating lunch in the cafeteria. Some of those children were excused for recess. Now there are 9 children in the cafeteria. How many children left for recess?
SCIENCE: Next week we will begin our unit on Air and Weather. The children will be recording weather observations in their science journal and weather vocabulary words as they are introduced.
SPELLING: Next week is a review week in our literacy program. We will be going over previously taught concepts. As usual, your child’s spelling words will be determined by how they do on their pre-test. However, what’s different next week is that I am not assigning challenge words. Your child may have anywhere from 0-10 spelling words.
ART: We have been having so much fun in Art every other week! We alternate between art lessons taught by our Art teacher, Sadie Temple, and working on a gift for you! J
SHARING: There will be no sharing next week. During the week of November 16-20, your child’s sharing must be brought to school in a paper bag. They will need to write down 3 clues that they will read to the class. Students will then try to guess what the sharing is.
TECHNOLOGY: This week I introduced the kids to the idea of going to different websites on the internet, by comparing it to going on a field trip. Like a field trip, it’s important to follow rules when we go to new websites. They learned three rules that help them safely navigate the internet (ask an adult for permission to access a website, only talk to people you know, and stick to places that are just right for you). Children also learned two ways of getting to a website: searching or typing a whole URL. The children had fun exploring the safe website, kids.sandiegozoo.org.
THANKSGIVING PROGRAM: Our class will be performing several reader’s theaters (“acting” with our voices), reading poems, sharing some Fall writing, and singing songs for our families on Tuesday, November 24th from 10:30-11:30 in the Jefferson Library. If you know your child will be absent that day, please let me know ASAP. Also, please discuss with your child what your family will be doing over the break (Nov. 25-29)---they will be writing about it next week.
